|Due to a constant heavy workload from the many one-of-a-kind services I offer - and
the constant demand for my innovations and developments to replace unavailable
parts with modern solutions, I welcome ONE type of phone call and ONE TYPE ONLY:
Calls from PAYING CUSTOMERS SEEKING REPAIRS OR CONVERSIONS. I absolutely
CANNOT and WILL NOT return or respond to calls for any other reasons from anyone.
|"I'm interested in doing a conversion, but I don't want my classic radio to look any different"
This is PRECISELY what the Aurora FM conversion products are designed for - they are meant specifically for
installation inside the radio's original cabinet, using your radio's EXISTING controls and tuner assembly. The
original AM dial remains in place, and it takes little time to learn which FM stations are at which dial number.
Having your radio converted to receive FM stations DOES NOT CHANGE ITS APPEARANCE in the dash. Nothing
is added, changed or removed on the front panel. The only visible difference will be that a 12-wire harness will
be installed in place of your original connectors - and this is BEHIND the dash where it cannot be seen.
To see this for yourself, I have more than 50 You Tube videos of my conversions - click on the "Videos" tab
If you plan to use only your current speaker setup and don't need more power, we CAN use the original plugs.
MAXIMUM audio power requires fully isolated speaker wiring with no common, grounded or shared wires. If
you're able to install new speaker wiring and upgrade to higher power speakers, that is the best option as this
will turn your innocent-looking radio into a modern audio powerhouse, with NO visible evidence of modification.
Per published specs, a converted radio is capable of producing power equalling 88 % of a MARSHALL STACK,
a FENDER TWIN or an AMPEG V4 - the stage amps used by nearly ALL professional rock bands in the 70's.
" Will the 8 track still work after conversion? "
C'mon guys - what's the name of my company, and what is my primary specialty ? Okay, I might I have asked too.
YES! Not only will it work, it will sound BETTER than when it rolled off the assembly line. My special hand-built
replacement tape head preamp provides a pronounced treble boost and rolls off annoying bass rumble. And
if your unit is a Ford, Chrysler or AMC, it will also come back with a brand new, adjustable speed MOTOR.
" How much does a conversion cost? "
Generally, the basic FM conversion for an indash radio-only unit is 395.00 including return shipping to the U.S.
Price for a combination radio/8 track is 495.00 including return shipping. These prices include up to 20.00 for
return shipping. For larger radios that won't fit safely into a 12 x 12 x 6 flat rate postal box, any return shipping
cost beyond 20.00 is added to the overall price. In this case, return shipping cost is estimated honestly.
To add Bluetooth, add 125.00 To add a USB reader, add 75.00. If your vehicle is not 12 volt negative ground,
an internal power adapter is required which costs an additional 75.00. Prices for add-ons are NOT marked up.
ALL PRICES ASSUME THAT THE CONTROLS AND TUNER ASSEMBLY ARE IN REASONABLY GOOD SHAPE.
MINOR, ROUTINE REPAIR TO THE TUNER IS INCLUDED - REPAIR OF BROKEN CONTROLS IS NOT.
I WILL RETURN, UNSERVICED, RADIOS DAMAGED BY CARELESS PACKING. PREVENT
BROKEN CONTROLS BY PACKING THE UNIT AS SHOWN ON MY "PACKING" PAGE !
" What about cosmetic work? "
I clean the unit as well as possible using ordinary household chemicals, cloths and fine steel wool. No radio
repair shops are set up for rechroming due to the expense, hazards and hassles with the EPA. Only car repair
shops do enough volume to make rechroming profitable. For this, I recommend Instrument Specialties
|Most Frequently Asked Question "What is the Turnaround?"
Rather than trying to guess at this, my "Job Status" page lists every job currently in my shop according to
when it arrived. This way the customer can precisely track the progress of his job from arrival to completion.
You can check the status of your job in the middle of the night, or any time you want - 24 hours, 7 days a week.
For an additional fee, I can guarantee a certain completion date - the fee will depend on how soon you need it.
My primary focus is QUALITY and LONG TERM RELIABILITY as is evidenced by my less-than-1% warranty rate.
Anyone can make this claim, but I have documentation from my last day job to back it up - simply click HERE
|Customers considering having a radio converted to receive FM generally all have the
same basic questions - please read through the following FAQ's to get those basic
answers and save us both time spent on the phone when we're ready to deal:
|To maximize my concentration on top notch quality workmanship and long term reliability, I have very strict
policies that the customer must agree to IN WRITING. This is automatic when you fill out the Work Order. MY
ABSOLUTE STRICTEST POLICY IS THAT CUSTOMERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO INTERRUPT MY WORK WITH
REQUESTS FOR JOB STATUS - NOT EVEN ONCE, OR THE JOB WILL, NOT MIGHT, BE CANCELLED RIGHT THEN.
My recent work history includes 5 years repairing equipment for NASA, Lockheed, Boeing, the U.S military and
every aircraft manufacturer you can think of. I will not be rushed or pressured without a substantial extra fee.
My turn time is when I am 100% convinced of your unit's long term reliability - not just on your unit, but all others
that arrived before yours also. Again - if the customer absolutely must have a certain promised completion date, it is
available for an extra fee. Guaranteed 6-8 week turn, add 149.00. Guaranteed 3-5 week turn, add 295.00.
Without paying for expedited service, you WILL NOT persuade me to make guesses on how long your job will take
and I will simply hang up and not answer your return call if you ask again after I've already stated this. This also
includes innocent questions such as "Well the car won't be finished until next spring anyway - it should be ready by
then, right?" Guys, I'm not making any half-promises or projections of any kind concerning this, it all depends
on how many jobs arrived before yours and what I run into on each of those jobs. I'm not about to invite future
arguments, tensions or negative vibes resulting from a courtesy guess that EVERYONE makes into a "promise".
If you don't have it in writing, I didn't say it - even if you DID pressure me for an answer !
You have the option of a guaranteed completion date to coordinate with your car restoration.
When you hire me, there are no vague "handshake" deals - we will know (and sign) exactly what we agree on. This
prevents misunderstandings - and is what EVERYONE should do when big money and time sensitivity are involved.
You can't pay me enough to "make a guess" 10, 20, 40 or 90 jobs ahead - you can only pay me for a PROMISE date.
My job is to send back a unit you'll never have to pull again - NOT to make sure it's ready for the next car show.
If it's so urgent, you need to pay me extra $$$ to be on the bench when I should be sleeping with the wife and cats !
If you're the type to call and harass "because you're the customer", that's fine - but you won't be MY customer. If
this policy causes you to court another shop, know that you are improving my income-to-stress ratio by doing that.
|"So, how do I operate my converted radio, and what are the available options?"
This is too much to adequately cover in a phone call or an introductory E-mail - all USER MANUALS are below.
But here is a quick general explanation of the most basic functions, features and available options.
THE BASIC FMR-2 CONVERSION ( Includes external AUX input if requested at no extra charge )
1. MAXIMUM power output ( 22.5 watts RMS per speaker, 90 watts RMS total - also stated as 180 watts "peak" total ) requires
a fully isolated speaker system - that is, 2 separate wires for each speaker with NO common, grounded or shared wires. You
don't have to use all 4 speaker outputs - any number from 1 to 4 speakers may be used. Maximum power requires upgraded
speakers, with each capable of handling at least 30 watts RMS, or 60 watts "peak". Your original connectors will be replaced
with a 12-wire harness, and full instructions are included for connection - INCLUDING Chrysler and other 3-speaker systems.
NOTE THAT MOST DELCO RADIOS 1972 AND LATER ALREADY HAVE FULLY ISOLATED SPEAKER WIRING
2. YES, YOU CAN KEEP USING ALL THE ORIGINAL CONNECTORS, power output will be roughly equal to the original radio.
3. HAVING YOUR RADIO CONVERTED DOES NOT CHANGE ITS ORIGINAL APPEARANCE FROM THE FRONT .
4. If your radio does not have an AM-FM selector switch, change bands by turning unit off, then back on within 1/2 second.
When the radio is left off more than 2 seconds, it will resume the last-used function when turned on again.
5. If your radio does not have a Balance or Fader control, you will use your TONE control to adjust these parameters. My
"Videos" page offers more than 250 videos demonstrating activation and adjustment of these functions. If your radio has a
TONE SWITCH, that switch will be reassigned to use the volume control to adjust these functions when desired.
6. Your tuner and station preset buttons will operate exactly as they did before. BONUS: On a Blaupunkt radio, you will
no longer be limited to 2 or 3 buttons to set FM stations - ALL buttons can be used for FM stations after conversion.
7. YES, THE 8 TRACK WILL WORK ( very popular question ). After using the 8 track, the radio will come back on immediately
when removing the tape. After using the AUX input, the radio will wait 15 seconds before coming back on. This is due to a
built-in VOX circuit that "holds onto" the AUX signal longer than necessary to prevent nuisance switching during quiet passages.
8. If so equipped, your original front-rear fader will not be used, in favor of the "virtual" fader using your tone control. This is
because original faders have a limited lifespan ( find a link explaining this from my "Videos" page ) and new replacements are
not available. Customers insisting on using the original fader, if still working, have NO GUARANTEES how long it will work.
UNLESS SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED, THE FADER FUNCTION IS REASSIGNED TO YOUR ORIGINAL TONE CONTROL.
9. The conversion and other options can be performed on ANY ANALOG RADIO. It cannot be used with a digital tuner.
10. All pricing applies to vehicles with 12 VOLT NEGATIVE GROUND. For all other vehicles, add 75.00 for an internal adaptor.
BLUETOOTH ADDITION - ADD 125.00
1. Bluetooth allows hands-free phone use, voice command and wireless audio streaming from a portable Bluetooth device.
2. Bluetooth functions are controlled using your radio's controls - this applies to CLASSIC ANALOG RADIOS ONLY.
3. This feature includes a microphone with 9 foot cable. The best place for the mic is on your visor, close to your mouth.
3. While the Bluetooth can be installed into a standalone 8 track player and will transmit the 8 track signal through a modern
Bluetooth radio, IT WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO CONTROL ANY OF THE FUNCTIONS FROM THAT MODERN RADIO. If you are
considering installing Bluetooth into a standalone 8 track player, all controlling is possible using only an included pushbutton.
IN THIS INSTANCE, REFER ONLY TO SECTIONS DESCRIBING USE OF "OPTIONAL PUSHBUTTON" in the Bluetooth manual.
USB ADDITION - ADD 75.00
1. Automatically switches to USB function when a USB stick containing music is inserted, switches back to radio when removed.
2. Uses your radio's controls to navigate through your music collection - works best with USB sticks containing ONLY music files.
Some customers have reported difficulties with USB sticks containing multiple folders. It is best to have only one folder per USB
stick, though you can still store literally THOUSANDS of songs on a single USB stick. Thus far, ALL problems and difficulties
were resolved through the customer's own research, and by consulting previous versions of the USB manual. Working through
such glitches is the CUSTOMER'S responsibility. All manual versions are available on Aurora Design USB Manual Downlad Page
3. If USB port is desired only for CHARGING, it is not necessary to purchase the entire USB package. I can instead install the
necessary 5 volt regulator and a USB cable which will have a USB port on the end. Add 30.00 for a charging port only.
Special note about using the AUX input (if requested)
The standard 3.5 mm round jack is a very inferior type of connector due to its small size and limited contact
area. This type of connector WILL eventually fail. At the very least, it will become noisy and intermittent. For
this reason, I will not install this type of connector. Instead, I mount a pair of RCA jacks directly on the unit
in the location of your choosing. From there, the customer must supply an adaptor cable which has a 3.5 mm
stereo plug on one end and the pair of RCA plugs on the other end. By installing only superior and reliable
connectors in places that are not readily accessible, we prevent the need to remove your unit from the dash.
The cable you will need is available at many places, and is described below:
2 RCA plugs at one end, 3.5 mm stereo plug on the other end
|Okay, now you can call me AS LONG AS we're not wasting time with
questions already covered on this page. If you would simply feel more
comfortable having a quick "get to know me" chat before sending off
your unit, that is perfectly fine also. Once again, unless you are going
to purchase expedited service, I CANNOT provide even a ballpark guess
on turn times - and will "take the 5th" in response to this question.
You will need to agree to my policies in writing for me to accept the job.
This occurs automatically when you sign my very detailed Work Order

Sending it in
|I don't get involved with replacing knobs, bezels, faceplates or any other purely cosmetic pieces. Your best bet
for cosmetics is to visit classic car forums, talk to the guys in your local car club, try eBay. ALL KNOBS AND
MOUNTING HARDWARE MUST BE REMOVED BEFORE SENDING IN YOUR RADIO - I ACCEPT ZERO LIABILITY.
|NOTE: READ THIS ENTIRE PAGE BEFORE CALLING !
|Two RCA plugs (not jacks) on the end that plugs into the radio. For tight spaces, you need "right angle" plugs.
One 3.5 mm STEREO AUDIO PLUG (not a jack) on the end to plug into your portable device. If your portable device
requires a 4-conductor plug, you will also need an adaptor to adapt this to a 3 conductor audio-only connector.
The fourth conductor is used for video on portable devices - refer to the manual for your device if needed.
|Here are the wiring and operating manuals for all available Aurora conversion and add-on products. If
any guidance other than that contained in these manuals is needed, you will need a local installer. I am
unable to offer any type of further tech support, and have had no trouble with the products to date. Just the
same, it is always best to read and make sure you understand the operation and features of these products.
|Thank you in advance for your understanding!
